Justin Abraham Johnson
(Justin with son Jude)
God has given us the ability and privilege to imagine and then give form to that image—the ability to create. As an artist, this fundamental aspect of being human is of particular concern.
Growing up on the central coast of California, nature has been an integral part of my life. When I was a child, taking the time to experience the world around me was hardly a conflict of interests; I had plenty of time and little responsibility. Now, as an adult, there are a host of responsibilities and time seems to travel at an ever increasing rate. With my art, I am once again offered the opportunity to take a look around me, making a conscious effort to see past the business of life and focus on what I once took for granted.
Discovering new environments (or rediscovering old ones) has always been an exciting and rewarding experience, whether it is the barely visible world of some insect, the overarching hilly landscape of San Luis Obispo, or the world of my 19 month-old son. These encounters have shaped, and continue to inform my artwork. Working in various media, synthesizing the representational with the abstract, there is always a print of the local environment showing through in some form. Seeing the rhythm and beauty in all that has been created is a constant inspiration and revelation of a love that has only barely been tapped into.
Justin received his BA in Art Studio from UC Santa Barbara in 2004. He currently lives in San Luis Obispo with his wife Heather, and son Jude.
